Simplified Design Formula for Tensile Axial Strain of Buried Pipeline Subjected to a Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Landslide
A simplified formula for the tensile axial strain of a pipeline subjected to a liquefaction-induced lateral landslide during an earthquake is proposed. The bending deformation and tensile axial load are formulated by combining the existing analytical methodology with the plastic hinge analysis. The pipe axial strain is formulated considering the interaction of the bending deformation and axial load on pipe deformation. The proposed formula is validated by performing finite element analysis for several pipe specifications. Furthermore, the application cases of the proposed formula are provided. This formula is useful in the preliminary design.
