Technology for Offshore Wind Vessels in Ice Conditions
Ice conditions, low air temperatures, and remoteness are affecting the functionality and operations of offshore wind vessels. In addition, cold climates and ice have an impact on the economics of offshore wind installation and maintenance. Vessels without proper ice class have limited capabilities to perform their duties in icy conditions, which may, at worst-case scenarios, interrupt the construction or operation of wind farms. Nordic countries, compromising of Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, are in a planning phase to build more than 5,000 offshore windmills, that require year round operation that includes the lengthy ice season.
