Always Problems with the Passion: A Contested Passion Performance in 1739 and the History of the Donkey

This essay critically evaluates the different explanations and challenges the assumption that the inclusion of passages from the Gospels of Matthew and Mark in the libretto for J. S. Bach’s Passion might have led to complaints by the authorities. Amalgamations of biblical texts were not only accepted in Bach’s time, but a harmonizing reading of different biblical books was the norm.
